COLUMBIA - Dr. Manly Eskew Hutchinson, Jr., 83, passed away peacefully at home May 16, 2020. Born October 9, 1936 in Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late Manly Eskew Hutchinson and Hildegarde Schroeder Hutchinson. Growing up in Columbia,
Manly attended Schneider and Hand and graduated from Dreher High School in 1954. After spending a year at The Citadel, he transferred to USC and graduated in 1958. He was a member of SAE Fraternity. Manly attended medical school at MUSC, graduating in 1962.
A rotating internship was served at the Medical College of Virginia where he met his wife, Anne Turnes Hutchinson. They married in June of 1964 after Manly completed 6 months of surgical training. Manly then entered the US Naval Flight School as a Lt. Commander. Manly served as a flight surgeon for a Marine transport squadron in California and Japan during the Vietnam War. He completed his residency in OB/GYN at the US Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA.
He then went on to complete his naval career in 1971 at the Charleston Naval Hospital. Upon returning to Columbia, Manly set up his OB/GYN practice. He was the Director of the Residency program at Richland Memorial Hospital until 1973. Manly was the Chief of Department of OB/GYN at Richland Memorial Hospital and then Chief of Staff at Baptist Hospital in 1991-1992. Manly was instrumental in introducing epidural anesthesia, fetal monitors, and laparoscopic surgery to Columbia. He was a member of many medical organizations.
Throughout his nearly half century of practice, he touched the lives of countless mothers and their families. The South Carolina Delta chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon won’t have a Spring Formal or their traditional Paddy Murphy party this semester, but the money that would have funded those and other social events will be shared by several area philanthropies.
In honor of fraternity brother Mathew Grossman, who took his own life in the fall, they are donating $4,000 to Hilinski’s Hope. “Ryan Hilinski has been very supportive and giving of his time to our brothers in need. We are proud to make this donation to such a worthy cause and we would like to encourage others to donate as well,” said Zachary Hunter, President of the fraternity.
The chapter also made a $4,000 donation to “Feed Our Heroes”, a non-profit started by Head Football Coach Will Muschamp and his wife Carol. “Because COVID-19 has affected us in many ways, the Muschamps wanted to help provide meals to the frontline workers in the healthcare field through non-profits who are partnering with local restaurants to provide those meals,” Hunter said.
The fraternity has also made a $4,000 donation to the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund for Students.
In addition to these generous gifts, the brothers of SAE, have donated $500 each to their House Cooks, Chris Croft and Bobby Jennings, to help them meet expenses until they receive unemployment benefits through the State of South Carolina. “We have also established a GoFundMe page to help both of them with incidental expenses that they may incur during this time, and to date, we have raised almost $6,500,” Hunter said.

Students held a vigil honoring the life of a USC student and Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity member Thursday evening, Aug 29, 2019 at Strom Fields. The student died by suicide in Greek Village this past Tuesday, creating a shockwave in the community.
Hundreds of students attended the event to pay their respects and offer support to one another, creating a mass of Greek letters at the field. Handheld candles were lit and passed around at the ceremony, starting with a procession of SAE members.
The procession was headed by a bagpiper playing a rendition of “We Hail Thee Carolina,” followed by SAE fraternity brothers dressed in navy sport coats. Following the procession, speakers took to the microphone to offer condolences and reminded students to seek help.
“Being vulnerable and open with your emotions is not weakness, it is human,” said Student Body President Luke Rankin.
Rankin, a fellow SAE member, joined his brothers in the procession and sat with them during the vigil.
University President Robert Caslen also stressed the need for students to seek help if they should need it.
“If we see someone who is struggling, then we should reach out to them. Let’s help erase the stigma of reaching out,” Caslen said.
Rev. Marcin Zahuta of St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church led a prayer, followed by a reading of 2nd Corinthians and a recitation of the Lord’s Prayer. The fraternity brothers embraced during the reverend’s reading.
As the ceremony reached its conclusion, the SAE members blew out their candles and retraced their steps from the procession.

First, I want to say how excited I am to be a part of SC Delta! When interviewing for this position in April I knew there was something special about this place and this fraternity. When I received the job offer, it only took me but a matter of minutes to have my paperwork signed and returned, I knew this is where I wanted to be.
Just so everyone has a little bit of knowledge of who I am, my name is Katie Lisle and I am native of Fort Worth, Texas. I attended Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas where I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture education and a master’s degree in higher education administration and leadership. I have worked in Student Affairs since 2014, including the division of student affairs, residence life and fraternity and sorority life. I have found a passion for working with college students, but my goal is to be a light in everyone’s life that I am a part of.
I am here to serve the students of the University of South Carolina, especially the men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon! Growing up I was a part of the 4-H and FFA Organizations, till this day my family still owns and operates both a show rabbit and show hog business that are located in Bridgeport, Texas, where my mother, Jill and father, Phil reside. My younger sister, Kendall, specifically oversees the show hog facility and operations.
Quick facts; I am member of Alpha Gamma Delta, I wish I could visit the beach every day, and I am a huge fan of Queen!

“I was ecstatic. It’s still very, very surreal,” Rankin said of when he learned he had won. “I’m so honored to have won and can’t wait to get to work.”
USC’s student body president is in an especially important position this year, current student body president Taylor Wright said in a previous interview. That’s because the student body president gets to set the tone between the students and the incoming president and provost.
Current USC president Harris Pastides is retiring at the end of July and Provost Joan Gabel was chosen to be president of the University of Minnesota.
In the runoff, Rankin got 3,852 votes, or 53 percent of the vote, and Swinton got the remaining votes, elections commissioner Kathryn Stoudemire said. The presidential election went to a runoff because no presidential candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, Stoudemire said.
More people voted in this year’s elections than last year. Last year, the general election and runoff drew 12,978 votes. This year, 14,843 students cast votes in both the general and primary elections, Stoudemire said.
As a candidate, Rankin, who was born in Conway and raised in Myrtle Beach, laid a proposal for his presidency including a 9/11 memorial event at Williams-Brice Stadium to raise money for student veterans, and expanding student government’s mental health awareness program Stigma Free USC to the rest of the state by partnering with other colleges....more here...

As founder of the DIG SOUTH Tech Conference, Stanfield Gray is making sure his part of the country doesn’t get left behind in the digital revolution. Gray says his two kids helped inspire him to leave the world of strategic communications and pursue the idea back in 2012, because he didn’t want them to grow up feeling like they “basically had to leave the state” in order to succeed in the startup world.
From humble beginnings—the conference was launched out of Gray’s garage in Charleston, with about $20,000 in Kickstarter funding—the confab grew to attract more than 2,000 attendees in 2018. Although a visit to Charleston is part of its appeal, Gray aims to put a spotlight on the entire area. By forming bonds among tech hubs in cities from Chattanooga to Raleigh, he thinks the region can compete with the likes of Silicon Valley. “Our mantra is ‘Succeed in the South,’” Gray says. —K.S.

He spent his youth in Columbia, graduating from high school in 1965. While attending high school many of accomplishments mirrored the man he became. He worked as an orderly at the local hospital at night, getting an early look at the life and career he would pursue. He also, to no one's surprise, was a South Carolina scholastic debate champion. After graduation, he attended the University of South Carolina, where he majored in Chemistry, and pursued his goal of becoming a physician. His medical school education took place at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston. Excelling in that educational experience, he moved to California in 1973, to begin his residency in General and Vascular Surgery at the University of Southern California. It was here, while in his third year of residency, during a rotation through Good Samaritan Hospital, that he met his wife, Carol who was working there as a nurse. They married in 1979,

Jason Brownell ’91 recently founded HeroHomes, a nonprofit foundation dedicated to providing deserving veterans the pride of home ownership. (HeroHomesLoudoun.org) The flagship project in the beautiful town of Purcellville, Virginia located in the heart of Loudoun Valley, represents the first step in our mission to make Loudoun County the showcase area for homes dedicated to wounded veterans. “In 2015 Jason, was asked to manage a building project in Lovettsville, VA, for wounded veteran named Tony Porta” said Aimee McGranahan, leadership chair at HeroHomes. Now part of our leadership team, Tony is a medically retired Marine corporal who sustained injuries from an IED explosion while serving in Iraq. Inspired by his story, we founded HeroHomes to help veterans and their families secure home ownership. The first home in this community is set on a third acre in an established community near the heart of town.
Jim Evans ’91 of Bradford Consulting Group (Bradfordllc.com) has been consulting with nonprofits, primarily nonprofit databases, since 1997. He recently developed and launched the crowdfunding website CloudDonate.com. Jason mentioned HeroHomes to Jim on a visit to Charleston and the two decided to combine their efforts. Jim donated his crowdfunding and social media management skills to HeroHomes raising over $5,000 on an initial forty five day campaign. Jim is managing the Twitter, Facebook and other aspects of the nationwide campaign to support HeroHomes.
At the first HeroHomes banquet in February HeroHomes announced a $10,000 grant. Jim and Jason are pictured celebrating the partnership.
For additional information on HeroHomes check out HeroHomesLoudoun.org A second crowdfunding campaign will go live over the weekend at CloudDonate.com

In the fall of 2013, the members of the Delta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of South Carolina was shocked to learn that one of their brothers, David Simone, had been diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma, a form of lymphatic cancer. David appeared to be in perfect health until he went home feeling sick one weekend. He was diagnosed rather quickly, and was unable to return to school. Needless to say, everyone in the chapter was stunned and devastated by this news, since David had been so close to all of them.
After learning of David’s diagnosis, the chapter immediately turned its attention to finding a way to help David and his family in any way possible. There was a unanimous decision amongst the brothers that all future philanthropic efforts of the chapter should be donated directly to David and his family in order to assist them in paying the medical bills associated with the treatment of his cancer. The brothers of SAE began their work for David in the spring of 2014 by hosting the first annual Simone Softball Classic. This event consisted of a softball game between the brothers of the SAE Chapter and members of the USC Police Department. That event alone raised upwards of $22,000, and over the course of 2014 the chapter raised a grand total of over $36,000 for David and the Simone family.
Additionally, the SAE Delta Mothers of Minerva, (mothers of the active chapter members), raised $1000 through a 2015 spring raffle that will also be contributed to David Simone’s fund.
With the return of spring, SAE has begun gearing up for the Second Annual Simone Softball Classic. This year the game will pit the freshman and sophomore brothers of SAE against the juniors and seniors. The game will be held in conjunction with the SAE True Gentleman Day of Service on Saturday April 18, at the Blatt Athletic Field on the University of South Carolina campus at 1300 Wheat Street. The location of the event has been moved in an attempt to generate even more student attention for the event. The major corporate sponsors for the event this year will be Red Bull and Guy Harvey. There will be multiple raffles at the game for Guy Harvey apparel and concessions will be sold at the game. The festivities will begin at 2:00 Saturday afternoon, and will continue until 7:00 that evening. Also, David Simone will be coming back into town from his home in Virginia Beach, VA in order to throw the commemorative first pitch of the game.
This year, the Softball game will be coupled with a second event on Sunday April 19, consisting of a highway cleanup off Bluff Road around Williams-Brice Stadium from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., followed by a cookout and bonfire with live music at the end of South Stadium Drive commencing at 7:30.
Both of these events are open to the public and will hopefully generate a good amount of support for David and his family. Tickets to the events can be purchased in one of two ways. All active SAE brothers in the chapter will be selling joint tickets for $25, which will provide entry to both events. However if someone is unable to commit to both events ahead of time, individual tickets will also be sold at the gate of each event for $15.
Visit our web site to purchase a ticket by using our electronic payment option with PAYPAL here.
Philanthropy Chairman Jamie McClement stated that, “As a Fraternity, the brothers of SAE intend to support their fellow brother and Gamecock as much as possible by helping to defray his medical expenses. We hope for good weather and a great turnout, and welcome the entire USC student body and Columbia community to come out and enjoy themselves.”
For more information or to inquire about getting involved with the event please contact JamieMcClement, Philanthropy and Service Chair for the SC Delta Chapter, via phone at 336-420-6239, or via email at jamesmcclement@gmail.com.

Submitted by Geoff Marston on 11/02/14 09:43:00 PM
This past thursday was the annual "Trick Or Treat With The Greeks" event held in the greek village. The event is for all children of USC faculty and staff, and is a great way that Sc Delta likes to give back to the community. The brothers gave out candy all evening, and had games for the children to play on the front lawn of the chapter house. Everyone involved had a blast and many childrens' nights were made!

I want to thank all of the parents who came this weekend to spend time with us. I had the pleasure of meeting a lot of parents, while the others hopefully I will get to introduce myself to in the near future. I thought the cocktail was a blast, thanks in large part to our brother Ben Miller. The True Gentleman Award, the Best All Around Award and the Best New Member Award all went to some extraordinary brothers: Beck Dugas, Austin Boyd, and Will Shealy respectively.
It was easy to tell that some of the guys had some to drink Friday, in the company of family, but this is only a glimpse into one side of these dynamic of the guys. These same men that were cutting loose and enjoying the company of parents are the same guys I see in the study room diligently working away at their classes, doing their very best to uphold our scholastic excellency, or offering to help set up our philanthropic events; I would say a well-deserved night of fun for everyone and a fun chance to get to meet the parents.
I am very proud of the shape that SAE is currently in. As I mentioned on stage, we have already raised over $9,000 for our brother David Simone, one of the most genuine kids I have ever had the opportunity to meet, all thanks to Jamie McClement, Will Kitchens, and the constant help that is offered from all of the guys in the chapter. More money will be raised for this effort in these next couple of weeks from T-Shirt sales that will be available for purchase coming soon.
There will be even more good things to come. I know Mrs. Allison Gant is already developing plans for the M.O.M. weekend to come in the spring, so be sure to stay tuned for more details as they develop. The BBQ that was promised for the tailgate unfortunately was not able to weave its way through traffic, so I would like to apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused. I can say, however, that the guys did thoroughly enjoy Sunday BBQ dinner at the house, for a cheaper cost than was anticipated for the tailgate.
Thank you again for coming to parent's weekend and I can help with anything in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I am proud to call each one of your sons, my brother, and I look forward to the next time I will have the pleasure of spending time with you again.
Cheers,
Michael Otten

Gamecocks Can Help Save Lives!
August 23, 2014 -- COLUMBIA, SC – Michael Otten, president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and Cameron Kahn, president of Alpha Epsilon Delta National Health Pre-professional Honor Society have organized a “Back 2 School” Blood Drive in association with the American Red Cross.
The event takes place on Friday, August 29, 2014 from 10am-5pm at two campus locations on campus:
-935 Blossom Street, in the Greek Village parking lot located behind the Strom Thurmond Wellness Center
-1705 College Street, which is right outside the Darla Moore School of business
Says Otten, “The American Red Cross of Columbia has generously provided us with two blood mobiles, as well as the staff necessary to assist the donors. We invite the entire USC student body as well as the Greater Columbia community to come on out and donate blood and help save lives. The challenge is on. Let’s show the world what the Gamecocks are made of.”
Collectively, Otten and Kahn have raised enough money to secure sponsors – including Sigma Nu Fraternity, Wendy’s, McDonald’s and Dr. Sims Tompkins orthodontist office, in order to provide free t-shirts to the first 300 donors, live music from a local DJ, and free food for the masses.
Adds Kahn, “What better way to end the first week back to school than by donating blood back to your local blood bank, getting some free stuff and helping to make a difference in lives of others!”
For more information, please contact Michael Otten at (402) 697-1983 or ottenm@email.sc.edu or visit the Facebook page at facebook.com/Back2SchoolBloodDrive.

The chapter sponsored philanthropy is an organization called Balefire in Columbia. This is a start-up non-profit organization. Balefire deals with substance abuse mainly in teens and adolescents. The members, with the assistance of Tom McHugh (Philanthropy Chairman), were able to help them raise the money needed to apply for their 501 c-3 status last year. The chapter is continuing their partnership this year starting off with a new event.
The director of the organization, Keith Buchanan, and Tom McHugh have been working closely with the local Fox Columbia station to set up a competition between SAE, ZTA, and Tri-Delt. Each organization will film a 30 second anti-drug/alcohol PSA (Public Service Announcement) that will be put on Fox’s website. These PSA’s will be voted on by the public and the winner will get a professionally produced PSA to be aired during any Fox Primetime airtime (Panther’s game, World Series, X-Factor, etc.), with the possibility of it getting picked up on a national broadcast. The members are looking to target high school and middle school students with the ultimate goal of stopping at least one child from taking the wrong path.
To be able to get this message to the public the chapter needs to raise $5,000 before October 5, between the three organizations, which is the cost of the airtime. They already have $1,200 and Fox has been helping them by filming all the PSA’s for free and are helping with another fundraiser as well.
Tom writes: “After talking with the chapter, we understand the magnitude of this opportunity and are dedicated to it and the cause. There’s no other organization on campus that this message resonates with more than us with the recent passing of one of our brothers, my pledge brother. Please help us reach our goal by logging onto Balefire’s Indiegogo site (http://www.indiegogo.com/p/211387) and donating. “

Author, historian and former aerospace executive William A. (Bill) Schoneberger has died at his home in Santa Barbara following a lengthy illness. He was 83.
A native of Cincinnati, he spent more than a half century participating in and chronicling the progress of U.S. aviation, though never an aviator himself. He was the author of nine books of aviation history and played a key role in the communications organizations of firms including General Electric’s jet engine division in Ohio and Northrop (now Northrop Grumman) Corporation in Los Angeles.
After World War II service in the Navy, Schoneberger earned a degree from the University of South Carolina and in 1955 was first professionally exposed to aviation when he joined the aircraft engine division of G.E. at Evendale, Ohio. There, he spent 17 years in charge of national and international advertising and promotion, heading a staff of 70 professionals and helping that firm establish itself in the rapidly expanding field of jet engine development.
He later wrote a book about G.E. called “Seven Decades of Progress,” about its innovative engine work, and collaborated on another titled “Herman the German,” the life story of noted G.E. engineer Gerhard Neumann.

We want to take the time to show off the improvements that have been made since you left in May, introduce everyone to the new house director, and answer any questions that you may have about the direction and/or expectations that we have for the chapter and individual members.
I know that this is shorter notice than is preferable, but we certainly would love to have any and all parents and brothers who are able to make it down for the afternoon.

The Mothers and Sons donated some funds to a Kappa Alpha Fraternity Pledge, Mac Dunbar. Mac, a freshman at USC, was struck by an automobile on an early Sunday morning while crossing Assembly Street on foot after having eaten at Sonic. He has sustained multiple internal injuries, including collapsed lungs, damage to the right kidney and broken bones. He has minor head injury and is on a respirator. It appears that there is no damage to his spine and heart. Mac is currently in critical condition at Richland Memorial Hospital.
Mac is making steady progress. The family was so appreciative of the donations we all made to them and they especially liked all the messages written by the boys.
The money we collected was combined with another group and Visa gift cards were purchased so that Mac's parents could use them during their lengthy stay in Columbia. You can check Mac's progress at www.CaringBridge.org. To get to Mac's site you have to use your email address and a password. Then type in macdunbar (without any spaces).
Meanwhile, Sheri Greenberg reported that the auction may have cleared about $1,800 which can be used for chapter projects. Many thanks to her for the hard work she and other parents put into making this a huge success. Write to her at runssg@aol.com.

The chapter is dedicated to philanthropy service projects that involve the members and builds an appreciation for our community and citizens.
In 1988, the Adopt-A-Highway program began in South Carolina, and has been one of the most successful programs in combating litter along our highways ever enacted. A group that wants to "adopt a highway" must agree to adopt at least two miles of highway and participate in three cleanups (or in some counties, four) per year. The group is committed for a two year period.
During clean ups, SCDOT provides safety vests and orange trash bags. Collected litter is left on site for pick up the following Monday by SCDOT personnel.
