Greenville, SC - The SC Delta Chapter Alumni Association will sponsor a summer rush party for prospective rushees from the Greenville, Anderson and Spartanburg area on Saturday, June 23, 2012 in Thornblade Country Club at 1275 Thornblade Boulevard in Greer.

The event is scheduled for 6 to 8 pm, with food and beverage provided. Rushees, their dates, their  parents as well as chapter members, their dates and parents and our alumni are invited to attend. Attire is casual.

Columbia, SC - April 4, 2012: SAE’s First Annual Fund Raiser for Balefire is scheduled for Friday afternoon, April 13 in Columbia. Balefire is a local organization that reaches out to teenagers with substance abuse problems. Details follow:

Note: Balefire, a religious-based organization in South Carolina, works to help teens under the age of 18 who are battling with substance addiction through social integration as well as biblical teachings. William A Schoneberger '45 passed away Aug 31, 2009. 

Author, historian and former aerospace executive William A. (Bill) Schoneberger has died at his home in Santa Barbara following a lengthy illness. He was 83.

A native of Cincinnati, he spent more than a half century participating in and chronicling the progress of U.S. aviation, though never an aviator himself. He was the author of nine books of aviation history and played a key role in the communications organizations of firms including General Electric’s jet engine division in Ohio and Northrop (now Northrop Grumman) Corporation in Los Angeles.

After World War II service in the Navy, Schoneberger earned a degree from the University of South Carolina and in 1955 was first professionally exposed to aviation when he joined the aircraft engine division of G.E. at Evendale, Ohio. There, he spent 17 years in charge of national and international advertising and promotion, heading a staff of 70 professionals and helping that firm establish itself in the rapidly expanding field of jet engine development.

He later wrote a book about G.E. called “Seven Decades of Progress,” about its innovative engine work, and collaborated on another titled “Herman the German,” the life story of noted G.E. engineer Gerhard Neumann.

Robert "Blake" Lofgren '06, is now a physician with the United States Navy at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.

Blake graduated from Carolina with a Business Administration and Biology degree, then completed his medical degree at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 2011. He was social chairman in the chapter.

Columbia, SC - Sept 12, 2011: SC Delta Chapter has selected the Columbia based, Oliver Gospel Mission as its primary community service and philanthropy project for this year.

The pledges and active members will be helping to serve meals and assist with cleaning. The members will be putting in a chapter total of between 30 to 60 service hours per week. The pledges will also put in 2 hours per person per week, working around their class schedules.

Oliver Gospel Mission, celebrating 120 years old, strives to see that the broken and homeless are sheltered, given the gospel of Jesus Christ, and equipped to live responsibly. It ministers to the community’s homeless by providing meals, shelter, and spiritual direction. The Mission is located at 1100 Taylor Street, phone (803) 254-6470.

SAE will also help the Mission with its annual golf tournament on Saturday, Sept 26 at the Columbia Country Club. In addition, members will be working in the thrift store.

Jerry Sifford SC Delta '62 was initiated as an active brother during the SC Delta Chapter ritual ceremony on Tuesday evening, August 30, 2011 in the Rutledge Chapel. Jerry pledged in the early 1960s and was unable to go active at the time. He was accompanied by his pledge brother, Morris Cave SC Delta '65.

Jerry writes: "Thank you for the kind expressions of friendship and assistance which you have extended to me during this special initiation process.  The solicitous attention which you showed me last night reinforced my fond memories of SAE, and the brotherhood which I enjoyed so many years ago.  Being initiated into SAE fulfilled one of my fondest dreams.  Now that I have been initiated, I hope that I can be of some service, in the future, to SC Delta, and to SAE."

Linda Carlan has accepted the position of House Director for SAE Fraternity at USC, replacing Tony Veschusio who retired in May.

Linda is an alumnus of Georgia State University with a graduate degree in MBA in Marketing and undergrad in Psychology. A native of Birmingham, she spent the last 4 years as house mother to the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at Georgia Tech.

We are excited to announce that we will be having an open house on Sunday, August 7th, 2011 at 1pm at the SAE SC Delta Chapter House in Columbia, on the USC campus. I know that this is before the house officially opens, but it corresponds with the Officer Retreat taking place that same weekend.

We have already talked with all of the parents and brothers who are moving into the house for this year and they are planning on being in attendance. We certainly hope that you can make plans to attend as well.

We want to take the time to show off the improvements that have been made since you left in May, introduce everyone to the new house director, and answer any questions that you may have about the direction and/or expectations that we have for the chapter and individual members.

I know that this is shorter notice than is preferable, but we certainly would love to have any and all parents and brothers who are able to make it down for the afternoon.

Gordon Parrott, 72, beloved husband of Judith Swofford Parrott, died Friday, December 10, 2010 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.

A native of Chattanooga, TN, Gordon was a son of the late William Gordon Parrott, Jr. and Mary Carolyn Arnold Parrott. He attended Porter and Baylor Schools and graduated from University of South Carolina. He built a career in banking and was a former senior vice-president of Farmers & Merchants Bank from 1979 to 1985 and former president of Farmers Bank in Union Point, GA from 1985 to 1987.

He was a co-founder and organizer of Aiken County National Bank. Gordon was a charter member of the South Carolina Society of The Order of The Founders and Patriots of America and a dual member of the North Carolina Society whose founder ancestor was Francis Parrott I, Esq. of Calvert County, MD who patented land in 1647 and whose patriot ancestor was John Parrott, Sr. of Falling Creek Plantation, Lenoir County, NC that fought in the American Revolution. Gordon was a past Genealogist and Deputy Governor of the South Carolina Society.

He was a member of the South Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and past president and vice-president of the Henry Laurens Chapter and was a member of the Order of First Families of North Carolina. He was a member of Clan McLeod and descendent of past Governor Thomas Gordon McLeod.

Gordon was a member of All Saint’s Anglican Church, Cotillion, Olde Town Plantation Hunting Club, Outing Club, Houndslake Country Club and Augusta Sailing Club. He loved duck hunting, sailing and traveling with his wife. He loved and cared deeply for his family and friends and had a great sense of humor.

Survivors, in addition to his wife Judith, include a son, William Gordon "Will" Parrott IV and his wife Amy of Aiken, a daughter, Elizabeth Parrott Duffy of Charleston, SC, and four grandchildren; William G. Parrott V, Elaina M. Parrott, James E. Duffy III and Brittany Anne Duffy.

Tony Veschusio, SAE Housing Director and Chef, retires effective May 15, 2011. He and his wife lived in the SAE House at Greek Village since it was built and occupied in 2002. Tony was well liked by the fraternity residents as well the housing director staff at USC. He will move into his condo in Forest Acres where he will continue to provide catering services to organizations. Tony was initiated as an honorary member of SAE in 2010. William Edwin "Ed" Hazel, Class of 1968, a native of Anderson, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, January 20, 2011.

Ed was a retired partner of Horizon Builders. He was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church and an enthusiastic volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Surviving, in addition to his wife Emily, are a son Will and his wife Mollie; and two grandsons, Aron and Connor.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, January 22, at 4:00 p.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church.

The Mothers and Sons donated some funds to a Kappa Alpha Fraternity Pledge, Mac Dunbar. Mac, a freshman at USC, was struck by an automobile on an early Sunday morning while crossing Assembly Street on foot after having eaten at Sonic.  He has sustained multiple internal injuries, including collapsed lungs, damage to the right kidney and broken bones. He has minor head injury and is on a respirator.  It appears that there is no damage to his spine and heart. Mac is currently in critical condition at Richland Memorial Hospital.

Mac is making steady progress. The family was so appreciative of the donations we all made to them and they especially liked all the messages written by the boys.

The money we collected was combined with another group and Visa gift cards were purchased so that Mac's parents could use them during their lengthy stay in Columbia. Jack Crawford '37 of New York passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2011. He was the chapter's oldest known
alumnus.
 
He was a poet. EXPLODE and OTHER POEMS is a collection of more than 50 poems. The poems have appeared in Potry,
as well as The Virginia Quarterly Review, The Massachusetts Review and the Southern Poetry Review literary journals.
 
Jack is also the recipient of the Theodore Roethke Award from Poetry Northwest.
 
His wife Susie writes: "I am Jack Crawford's wife, Susie, and wanted to let you know  that he passed away 
after a long and very serious illness on Thursday, March 17th - St. Patrick's Day.  I wanted for you to know 
something of what he had to say in his will,because it says it all:
 
"I have loved life, which has sustained me in endless wonderment.  I thank whatever brought me here and am grateful for the 
consciousness which leaves me stunned with inexhaustible amazement.  Life is worth the dying which must bring it to a close.

Columbia, SC - Feb 28, 2011: SC Delta Chapter has signed up for the South Carolina Adopt A Highway Program. The assigned street is Bluff Road, near Williams Brice Stadium in Columbia. The chapter is dedicated to philanthropy service projects that involve the members and builds an appreciation for our community and citizens.

In 1988, the Adopt-A-Highway program began in South Carolina, and has been one of the most successful programs in combating litter along our highways ever enacted. A group that wants to "adopt a highway" must agree to adopt at least two miles of highway and participate in three cleanups (or in some counties, four) per year. The group is committed for a two year period.

During clean ups, SCDOT provides safety vests and orange trash bags. Collected litter is left on site for pick up the following Monday by SCDOT personnel.

SC Delta Chapter selected their first two delegates to attend the annual SAE National John O Moseley Leadership School this summer:

• Tony Petrozza, '13, from Statesville, NC, attended McCallie School, and
• Justin Mims, '13, from Pamplico, SC, attended Pamplico High School.

Both delegates will have their tuition covered by the SC Delta Chapter Education Fund, which was set up with the SAE Foundation in 2005. Started in 1935, the leadership school has over 35,000 graduates, and is now a cruise that leaves from either Miami or San Diego for 4 days.

SC Delta at the University of South Carolina is the 35th chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, founded on Feb 28, 1882. The chapter has over 2,000 alumni and undergraduates, and celebrated its 125th Anniversary in 2006. The chapter house was built in 2002 at 509 Lincoln Street and named after the late David S Lewis, Jr. '35.

Greenville, SC -  Jan 8, 2011 - Wilton J "Skinny" McKinney, 89, of 238 Byrd Boulevard in Greenville, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2011 at McCall Hospice House of Greenville after a period of declining health. He graduated from Greenville High School and the University of South Carolina, where he was Student Body President, Captain of the Gamecock Tennis Team and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Later he became the coach of the Greenville High School boy's tennis team, a voluntary position he served for 25 years. His teams won 16 State High School Championships and three Southern High School Championships. He also coached the Greenville High girl's tennis team for one year and they won a State Championship. Dec 10, 2010 - R Craig Thrift, '01, has joined the Littlefield Group of Companies in Knoxville as General Counsel and Vice President of Business Development. He is also current Chief Operations Officer at Boat-N-RV. Craig obtained his JD degree from Washington & Lee University after graduating from Carolina with BA in Management and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Originally from Charlotte, Craig graduated from Myers Park High School. William "Bill" D Britton, '70, announed a recent career change from economic development and real estate to join Noble Automotive, LLC and Making U Mobile, LLC, as a consulting career in Myrtle Beach. Bill writes: "Both company's are family owned and headquartered in Myrtle Beach. My primary focus will be assistant to the Owner, as well as product development and marketing." He went on to say: "The company's main product is The Noble Car. It will be the first car imported into the US from China. George Short, '80 SC Delta, passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2010 from an extended illness in Greenville, SC. Born February 19, 1957 in Montgomery, Alabama, he was a graduate of Wade Hampton High School and The University of South Carolina.

George was a Certified Public Accountant for 27 years. He was the Shareholder and CEO of George O. Short and Associates, PC from January 2007 to December 2009, and a partner in George O. William F Cave '60

Billy Cave, managing principal with Reliance Trust Company in Atlanta, has been elected to the board of directors of the Tara Hall Home for Boys in Georgetown. The home serves abused, neglected, and troubled boys. Cave is also president of the Georgetown area USC Alumni Assn. He lives at DeBordieum Colony outside of Georgetown. For those of you that know Tony Veschusio, you met the person behind the scenes of our chapter at Carolina. He is the current house manager and chef, and has been since fall of 2002 when the house opened at 509 Lincoln St. The chapter voted to initiate him into SAE as an honorary member, and the ceremony was conducted in April.

Tony is a hard working, easy going personality that most of the guys like. At times he has to crack down on poor behavior in the house, and you cant always agree on what to eat from his menu, but he is the "glue" that keeps that house operating with 38 tenants.

Friday, Nov 5, 2010 will be the 10th annual SAE Homecoming Reunion at the Palmetto Club in downtown Columbia. Food, beverage/open bar and music (new) will be provided this year. Alumni, parents, brothers and spouses will be welcome. Start time is expected to be 8:00 pm. Cost will be provided later (sponsors welcome).

Parents Weekend is Sept 17-19. The Parents Committee has selected Friday, September 17 for a social at the house on the campus. Time to be decided. Food, beverage and music will be provided.

On Sunday March 28, 2010 at 5:00 pm, we will donate the money raised from the chapter's Running for a Cause to the Dalton Help Foundation at the Alpha Delta Pi House on the USC campus.

SAE and ADPI will present (2) checks worth $5,000 each to the Foundation. Food will be provided by Walt Cockfield's father's BBQ catering and music will be provided by the SAE band  "E Harmony Shakedown". At the end of the dinner we will give a brief history of Running for a Cause, the Foundation representatives will talk about their cause, and we will present the checks.

Charles "Chuck" M Timmons '72 of Greenville, announced his retirement in November 2009 after 37 years as president and CEO of Canal Insurance Company.

Chuck joined the company in 1972 after receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina. After a brief time away to obtain his MBA from Georgia State University,

Timmons returned to Canal and was eventually promoted to Chief Operating Officer. He served as COO for over eight years until the death of his father, at which time the Board of Directors elected him President and CEO.

Over the last ten years, Timmons has solidified Canal Insurance Company’s position as a leading commercial auto insurer. The company, rated A+ by A.M. The new chapter alumni board has been named and will be starting its responsibilities upon chapter elections of new officers at the end of March. Board members must attend a few meetings each semester, server for a term of one year, and act as a mentor for an officer.  Also, you must have graduated at least 2 but not more than 12 years.

Along with John Dillard and Courtney Leavitt, additional members of the Alumni Board are Josh Nexsen, Schipp Ames, Kyle Crabb, Matt Robinson, Drew Painter, Charlie Irick, Jac Carrington and William Douglas.

Hunter Hastings, Russ Purdy and Carl Zimmerman have been accepted into the Masters in International Business School (MIBS) at USC. Only about applicants are selected each year in this top ranked program. The members' languages include German for Carl, Spanish for Hunter and Chinese and Spanish for Russ.

Nexsen Pruet announced Nov 17, 2008 that Larkin Ellzey joined the firm as as associate attorney.

Larkin earned his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina and his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was book editor of the Southeastern Environmental Law Journal.

New Company - AHRG International LLC

Jeff Antonelli '88 announced the formation of a newly formed company called AHRG International LLC (www.leaderexperts.com) specializing in International Human Resource consulting.

He is partnered with Talent Scope, a premier HRIS software provider and positioned business for potential sales of over $150,000 of implementation fees and subscriptions.

Over the last four months, his primary client has been Platinum Equity and two of its newly acquired portfolio businesses, 3B – Belgium and Geesinknorba – the Netherlands. His projects consist of executive coaching, 360 for the CEO and the leadership teams; SG&A cost savings, HR strategic alignment and the implementation of new performance management systems.

The annual meeting of the SC Delta Alumni Association, as required by SAE National Laws, is Monday, January 25, 2010, in the conference room of the law offices of Ellis, Lawhorne & Sims, P.A., from 5:30 pm until 6:30 pm. There is no charge for the meeting, and attire is casual. We have asked the chapter officers to attend and give us an update on the coming semester and short terms plans for 2010. We will also elect or reelect officers for the Association, discuss Homecoming and a golf tournament, review fund raising goals, and get a report from the housing corporation.

Brothers Andrew Lynn and Zach Carlton attended the 2009 SAE 74th John Moseley Leadership School in San Diego. Unlike previous schools which were held in Evanston near the Levere Temple, the last few years the schools have been on cruise ships departing from Miami or San Diego.
